Top tips for drying reusable cloth nappies in the winter...

With Winter creeping ever closer and energy prices through the roof, the thought of drying Reusable Cloth Nappies (and laundry in general) might seem a little daunting!

Here are our top tips for getting your reusable cloth nappies dry in those colder months:

  • Hang them outside when possible: Check the weather forecast and if it’s going to be dry, then you’re good to hang your clothes outside! It will take a bit longer due to the cooler temperatures, but is a great option for allowing items to air properly and avoid musty smells from indoor drying that simply takes too long!

  • Tumble dry if needed: Cloth nappy inserts take a lot longer than the nappy shell to dry, due to the fact they absorb lots of moisture from the wash! One tip is to allow them to air dry in a well-ventilated room overnight and then stick them in the tumble dryer on a low heat to finish them off in the morning.

  • Put clothes airer near radiator: Make the most of having the heating on and position clothes airers next to radiators. It is not recommended to place PUL pocket shells directly on the radiator, but proximity to the heat source helps with the drying process!

  • Consider buying additional inserts: Pocket nappies are particularly versatile in the cooler weather as inserts can be interchanged in between washes. The pocket shell and microfleece dry very quickly, so it is useful to have additional inserts available to reduce turnaround between washes.

  • Dehumidifiers: A dehumidifier is a great addition throughout the year to help dry cloth nappies / laundry and reduce allergens in the home. They help to remove moisture from the air to alleviate damp and mould in the house. Many of the new models even have a dedicated ‘laundry-drying’ setting.
